Sachithanantham, P.
Universities consist of multi religious, multi - cultural and multi lingual student population,
where it is expected to have social harmony among those undergraduates. However there have
been recorded incidences and evidence to prove ethnic friction and linguistic Barriers in
sustaining harmonious atmosphere in university education. Therefore, it is understood that the
existing administrative mechanism has not improved social harmony among undergraduates of
multicultural and multi linguistic background. Eastern university is teaching social harmony in
English to have a common medium of instruction. Most of the Undergraduates who entered
the Eastern University come from rural area and poor family background and they learnt in
their mother language at the schools. Though majority of the university programmes are taught
in English, schools have their curriculum in Sinhala and Tamil. Therefore students enrolled in
to the university where their programme is in English will have trouble both in understanding
the subjects as well as in communicating with other. These students face some problems such
as transferring ideas, communication and interaction, mutual trust. Highlighting one
community culture might be perceived as threat to others. Even after teaching social harmony
at the university there are notable incidents challenges to normalcy between different students
communities. The research intends: a ) to learn how teaching social harmony contributes to
make stability in the cohesive relationship among the students in the university; b ) to learn
what are the programmes practised in the universities; C ) to learn what are the programme
undertaken in other universities; and d ) to identify the challenges to sustain the harmony
between different students communities. Undergraduate population of EUSL are of Sinhala
and Tamil in terms of language, where majority of the programme are conducted in English
except. For faculty of Arts and Culture. Social harmony programme no exception. However
informal communication is primarily done in their mother languages which might lead to
misunderstanding and therefore will widen the gap between different undergraduate
communities. Therefore more emphasis should be laid on social harmony programmes that will
bring multi ethnic students together. Cultural activities should be encouraged in addition to
teaching social harmony in class

Sachithanantham, P.
The present paper focuses to identify the salient characteristics of the democratic and
resilient leadership styles reflect in Bhagavad Gita. Bhagavad Gita is one of the worldrenowned Holy Scriptures which potentially deals with the qualities of leadership because it
has been developed in the form of conversation between the leader and the follower.
Further, to some scholarly interpretations, criticizing the norms of Bhagavad Gita as those of
autocratic and other leadership styles, contemporary leadership approaches also pay less
attention and highlights its importance demanding its holistic view of leadership as reflected
in Bhagavad Gita. Contrary, the scriptures profoundly advocate the leadership skills in a
holistic manner as the democratic and resilient leadership are very much related to the
personality of a person in terms of physical, mental and spiritual development of a person. So
that, it can be suggestive that Bhagavad Gita practically revolves around a Democratic leader
who develops leadership qualities and behaves and guides his followers in the extremely
curial situations, even in the battle-front towards success. Through the analysis to textual and
scriptural sequences, the present study enabled identifying the role of a leader as a
Negotiator, Coach and Motivator, Team Builder, Friend, Advisor, Guide and a spiritual
Mentor, This is particularly reflected in the conversation between the lord Krishna and Arjuna.
Thus, it can be concluded that Bhagavad Gita brings the characteristics of leadership through
‘’ the leader attempts to influence his or her followers to establish and accomplish a goal or
goals’’. To accomplish the goal, the leader exercises his or her power to influence people. That
power is exercised for motivating followers to get the task achieved and this is reflected in
the Gita. Personal traits of leader such as assertiveness, high tolerance in frustration,
charisma, inspirational, role model behaviour, responsibility, performance orientation, risk
taking, flexibility is also reflected in the Gita. Ultimate outcome of the study brings back the
interconnectedness of the personality traits and the characteristics of a democratic and
resilient leadership styles that are reflected through Bhagavad Gita.

Sachithanantham, P.
After the end of the civil unrest, the necessary of social harmony and
peacebuilding is paid more attention in the reconciliation process. The
important of peace and harmony have become a central theme of investigation
among academics as well as other sectors for the sustainable development of
the country. As far as higher education is concerned, universities had to play a
pivotal role in building up mutual trust and relationship among the multi ethnic
community undergraduates for the betterment of the future, because the
possibility of interaction between the multi ethnic communities was affected by
the civil unrest. Hence there is prime need for understanding each other when
they come together in the universities specially in the north eastern universities,
where the number of multi ethnic undergraduates increased rapidly after the
war. Thus the Eastern, South Eastern, Jaffna universities are facing difficulties in
handling the multi lingual student population and creating harmonious
relationship among them. Clashes among undergraduates that have been
recorded in the universities clearly indicate that unrest prevails in the
universities. Therefore, this study intends to identify and investigation; a) what
social harmony programmes are being implemented in these universities, b)
what challenges are faced by the universities in fostering social harmony among
the undergraduates, c) what can be suggested further to improve and
strengthening the social harmony. For this, research has been primary using
data obtained through interviews, participation observation and used research
books, encyclopedia, universities hand books, and related, materials, such as
e-resources. The research found those universities incorporated the social
harmony subject as a compulsory component in their curriculum. In addition,
the IRQUE, and the HETC Projects, also contributed in various ways for
enhancing social harmony activities such as cultural programmes, field trips,
inter-university student exchange programmes for fostering social harmony
among the under graduates, even though various elements are contributing to
disturb the peaceful environment of the north-eastern universities.
