Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate levels the top management green commitment and
green intellectual capital as enablers of bank environmental performance of selected
banks in Batticalo a. Data was collected from 96 staff who are working in top
management level of banks. Frequency, univariate, bivariate and regression analyses
were conducted. The results showed that there is a high level of environmental
performance in the study area. Correlation analysis indicated significant positive
relationship between top management green commitment, green intellectual capital and
environmental performance. These factors were found to explain a significant portion
of the variation in environmental performance of banks in Batticaloa.
The study concludes that organizations' concerning environmental performance can
achieve its environmental goal through top management commitment and intellectual
capital that is related to natural environment since top management green commitment
plays a crucial role in engaging and motivating employees towards environmental
performance while green intellectual capital being a major factor that consists overall
knowledge and information regarding natural environment to sustain in environmental
performance. The overall study provides insights for government and policymakers in
promoting environmental performance among bank sector organizations.
Based on the findings of this research, the policymaker should focus at adopting
policies to enhance the top management of organizations to sustain in environmental
performance and develop knowledge management systems that accumulate information
regarding environmental issues. Also the government should emphasize environmental
concerns and encourage establishing environmental friendly organizations, establishing
organizations related to environmental protection to partner with banks to assists them
developing green intellectual capital among employees engaging in environmental
performance. This can be implemented in all the business sector to follow
environmental concerns expecting benefits from environmental performance.
